LL&C doctoral student Jason Waite, under the direction of Profs. Cheryl Geisler and James P. Zappen, presented a paper, "A Locus of Motives: Internal Persuasion and the Formation of Post-Appalachian Self and Community in Foxfire," at the Penn State Conference on Rhetoric and Composition.

Junho Choi Presents at Pace University's Environmental and Religious Studies Conference - 08.08.2005 


LL&C Assistant Prof. Junho Choi presented a paper titled "Intercity Networks of Internet Backbone and Air Transportations: The World Cities of Information and Human Flows in 1999 and in 2002," at Pace University's Institute for Environmental and Regional Studies (PIERS) annual conference -- The Globalization of Place: A Contest Between Transnational Anonymity and Presence.

Katherine Isbister Presents Her Research on Social Gaming - 08.08.2005 


LL&C Associate Prof. Katherine Isbister presented a talk and a workshop on her research on social gaming at the Digital Games Research Association annual conference in Vancouver, Canada; and she participated in a panel at the International Communication Association's annual conference in New York City where she outlined the H&SS approach to developing an undergraduate games major at Rensselaer.

Priya Nambisan Presents an Audio/Tactile Statistics Curriculum at Human-Computer Interaction International 2005 Conference - 08.08.2005 


LL&C graduate student Priya Nambisan presented "A Model for Enhancing Graphical Learning for Students with Print Disabilities: An Audio/Tactile Statistics Curriculum," (with Watt, J.H., Gourgey, K., Landau, S., and Gourgey, A.) at the Human-Computer Interaction International 2005 conference held July 22-27, 2005, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The conference objective was "to provide an international forum for the dissemination and exchange of scientific information on theoretical, generic, and applied areas of HCI, usability, internationalization, virtual reality, universal access and cognitive ergonomics."

Binod Sundararajan, LL&C doctoral student, received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award from the Instructional and Developmental Communication division at the annual International Communication Association (ICA) conference in New York, May 28, 2005.

James Watt Elected Chair of Game Studies Special Interest Group - 07.05.2005 


James Watt, Prof. of LL&C and Director of the Social and Behavioral Research Lab, was elected Chair of the Game Studies Special Interest Group at the International Communication Association (ICA) annual conference in New York on May 27.

The new SIG was approved by the ICA Board of Directors at the conference and begins with over 100 members.

Junho Choi Appointed Secretary of Korea-America Communication Association - 07.05.2005 


Junho Choi, Assistant Prof. in LL&C, was appointed secretary of the Korea-America Communication Association (KACA). The goal of the Association is to facilitate international and cross-cultural research on the communication issues between Korea and the U.S.

LL&C Doctoral Students Participate in Media Ecology Association Conference - 07.05.2005 


LL&C doctoral students Gabriele Bechtel, Sandrine Dincki, and Liza Potts recently participated in the 6th Annual Media Ecology Association's "The Biases of the Media" conference in New York City in June 2005.

Each student presented her paper on the panel entitled "Media Bias and the Emerging Online Communities".

Audrey Bennett Presents Her Design Lab Book at AIGA Conference - 06.23.2005 


LL&C Associate Prof. Audrey Bennett presented "Design Lab Book: Teaching Collaborative Designing with Empirical Inquiry" at Revolution: Philadelphia, AIGA's National Design Education Conference in Philadelphia, June 3-4, 2005.

Bennett's student project proposal was one of four (out of 28) proposals accepted for a main-stage presentation at the conference. Each juror's top ranked project was presented at the conference, and Professor Emeritus Kenneth Hiebert ranked Bennett's project number one.

Hani Lim Wins Ad Club Scholarship - 06.23.2005 


Hani Lim, an EMAC student, was one of two students to win a prestigious Ad Club scholarship for $2500.

"The Ad Club of Albany offers two students who are entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year at an accredited, local-area, four-year college or university a $2,500 scholarship for educational expenses. Applicants must have a registered major in one of the following fields of study: communications, marketing, advertising, graphic arts, public relations, or any other specifically-related communications curriculum. The scholarships are awarded by a panel of active communication professionals who use the following criteria to select the winners: clearly demonstrated interest in communications, academic achievements, community and social involvement, and personal recommendations."

Binod Sundararajan Selected to Participate in National Communication Association Doctoral Honors Seminar - 06.15.2005 


LL&C doctoral student Binod Sundararajan has been accepted as participant in the National Communication Association Doctoral Honors Seminar in the Communication Theory and Research group. Sundararajan was one of 11 doctoral students selected nationwide.

Professors Roxanne Parrot (Penn State), Austin Babrow (Indiana/Purdue) and Sandra Petronio (Purdue) will be chairing the workshop sessions to be held in Norman, Oklahoma on July 25-28, 2005.

Sundararajan also received a graduate teaching award from the Instructional and Developmental Communication division of the International Communication Association (ICA) at its annual conference in New York City, May 2005.

James Watt Presents Paper on Web Ads at ICA Conference - 06.15.2005 


LL&C Prof. James Watt presented "Impact of the pragmatic value of Web ads on the conventional model of advertising effects" to the Information Systems division of the International Communication Association (ICA) at its annual conference in New York City on May 27. The paper was co-authored by LL&C graduate student Priya Nambisan.

Katherine Isbister Exhibits Her SimBee and SimGallery Projects - 06.15.2005 


LL&C Assistant Prof. Katherine Isbister had two public exhibitions of her work: a showing of SimBee in New York City at the Interactive Multimedia Culture Expo at the Chelsea Art Museum, April 2005; and a showing of SimGallery project in Prague at the International Festival of Art and New Technologies, May 2005.

She also co-chaired a Workshop on Innovative Approaches to Affective Evaluation at the ACM Computer-Human Interaction (SigCHI) conference, April 2005.

Priya Nambisan Receives Post-Doctoral Position in CHSRA, University of Wisconsin-Madison - 06.15.2005 


LL&C doctoral student Priya Nambisan has been awarded a one-year post-doctoral position in the Center for Health Systems Research and Analysis (CHSRA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She will assume this position after completing her dissertation in August 2005.

Priya Nambisan Selected to Participate in American Medical Informatics Association Doctoral Consortium - 06.15.2005 


LL&C doctoral student Priya Nambisan has been selected to participate in the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Annual Doctoral Consortium to be held in Washington D.C. in October 2005.

Based on a competitve selection process, this doctoral consortium brings together 10 doctoral students from across the country to participate in a one-day workshop that will be led by senior scholars in the area. Priya was selected based on her paper submission titled "Online Customer Communities and HMOs: A Knowledge Management & Knowledge Socialization Perspective".
