Katherine Isbister Participated in 2006 Game Developers Conference - 04.28.2006

LL&C Associate Prof. Katherine Isbister co-chaired an all-day tutorial called "Emotion Bootcamp" at the 2006 Game Developers Conference in San Jose, CA, in March 2006. The tutorial was featured in coverage of the conference by Gamasutra.
Prof. Isbister gave a solo lecture at the conference titled "Future Game Characters: Out of the Lab and into your Game"; participated in a Virtual Symposium titled Breaking the Game which involved using technologies such as Skype and i-Chat; and gave a tour of the Second Life game to discuss issues around virtual self and society.
In addition, Prof. Isbister co-chaired a day-long Game Design Curriculum Workshop, attended by 300 participants, where she presented a case-study of Rensselaer's proposed new Game and Simulation Arts and Sciences undergraduate major.
Sin-Hwa Kang Presented at IEEE Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications - 04.13.2006

LL&C 3rd-year doctoral student Sin-Hwa Kang recently attended the Doctoral Consortium of the 7th Annual IEEE Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications, April 6-7, 2006, at the Semiahmoo Resort in Washington state, where she presented a paper, "The Effect of Avatar Realism on Users' Sense of Social Presence in Emotionally Engaged Mobile-Phone Communication".
Ms. Kang submitted her directed research project for the Doctoral Consortium to a Committee organized by Jason Hong of the HCI Institute, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University. Only three doctoral students internationally were chosen, including Ms. Kang.

James Watt Awarded Fulbright Senior Specialist Grant - 04.12.2006

James Watt, LL&C Prof. and Director of the Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory (SBRL), has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialist Grant to visit the University of South Australia in Fall 2006. During this visit, he will work with the faculty of the School of Communication Information and New Media to develop a new Bachelor of Media Arts degree that includes a specialization in games and simulation. He will assist with defining the structure, organization, implementation, and evaluation of the new curriculum. During his stay, he will also deliver lectures and research colloquia on topics in human-computer interaction and computer-mediated communication.
Audrey Bennett Publishes Class Project on Typography - 03.16.2006

LL&C Associate Prof. Audrey Bennett had a class project titled "Type Specimen Book & Typeface Analysis" published in Type Rules!: The Designer's Guide to Professional Typography, 2nd Edition, edited by Ilene Strizver and published by John Wiley & Sons, February 2006.
It includes a sample of student work by LL&C undergraduate Communication major, Hunter Dougless.
Cheryl Geisler Wins Award for Significant Contribution to Scholarship in Rhetoric - 03.16.2006

LL&C Prof. and Chair Cheryl Geisler has won the Rhetoric Society Quarterly's Kneupper Award for 2005.
The Charles Kneupper Award is given annually to recognize the article published in that year's volume of Rhetoric Society Quarterly that the editorial board and the editor consider the most significant contribution to scholarship in rhetoric.
The award was given for the article, "Teaching the Post-Modern Rhetor: Continuing the Conversation on Rhetorical Agency" (35:4, 83-113).

Patricia Search Has Solo Exhibition of Landmark Work in Digital Art - 03.16.2006

LL&C Prof. Patricia Search had a solo exhibition of her artwork at the National Association of Women Artists gallery in New York City, February 6 - March 3, 2006. The exhibition highlighted her landmark work in digital art.

Sabahat Ashraf '97 Appeared Recently on The Brian Lehrer Show - 03.16.2006

Steven Katz '88 Accepts Pearce Professorship at Clemson University - 03.16.2006

LL&C alumnus Steven Katz '88 (Ph.D., Communication and Rhetoric) has accepted an endowed chair, the Pearce Professorship, at Clemson University.
Steve is currently a Professor of English at North Carolina State University at Raleigh. A revised version of his dissertation was published under the title The Epistemic Music of Rhetoric: Toward the Temporal Dimension of Affect in Reader Response and Writing by Southern Illinois University Press, and he has another book in print (Writing in the Sciences: Exploring Conventions of Scientific Discourse).
Rensselaer Inducts New Members Into Phalanx Honor Society for 2006 - 03.13.2006

Erin Glasheen (Director of Undergraduate Programs in EMAC, Arts, and Communication), along with twenty-seven students and Cameron McLean (Rensselaer Union Activities Coordinator), was inducted recently into the Phalanx honor society.
Phalanx honors student leadership and celebrates those who have "worked to better the standing of Rensselaer both on and off campus." New members are selected -- or "tapped" -- by the student members of Phalanx.
Besides directing undergraduate programs for the Departments of LL&C and Arts, Erin also advises all undergraduate majors in the Communication, EMAC, and eARTS programs; IT/Arts and IT/COMM students; and all minors from both departments.

James Watt Co-Presents on Ethnical Issues in Conducting Emergency Research - 02.17.2006

James Watt, LL&C Prof. and Director of the Social and Behavioral Research Lab (SBRL), and Wayne Triner, D.O., M.P.H., attending physician in the Emergency Department at Albany Medical Center Hospital, presented "Ethical Issues in Conducting Emergency Research Where Consent is Waived," at Ethics Grand Rounds at the Albany Medical Center on December 15.
The project is the basis of a pending collaborative NIH R01 grant proposal submitted by Albany Medical Center and Rensselaer's SBRL.
Junho Choi Co-Publishes Article on World City Networks - 02.17.2006

LL&C Assistant Prof. Junho Choi, with George Barnett and Bum-Soo Chon, published "Comparing world city networks: A network analysis of Internet backbone and air transport intercity linkages," in the Journal of Global Networks: A Journal of Transnational Affairs. 6(1), Special Issue: Return to Cyberia: Technology and the Social Worlds of Transnational Migrants. January, 2006.
Katherine Isbister Co-Organizes Workshop in Sweden, Receives Nomination for Best Paper - 02.17.2006

LL&C Associate Prof. Katherine Isbister co-organized a workshop in Sweden, with Kristina Höök and Jarmo Laaksolahti of the Swedish Institute for Computer Science, conducted as part of a European Union Network of Excellence funded project titled Humaine.
The workshop focused on "Innovative Methods for Evaluating User Affect When Engaging With Interactive Systems."
Also, Isbister's paper submitted to the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2006) was nominated for Best Paper. Only 5% of research submissions were selected for this designation. The paper describes research on a tool for assessing users' emotional reactions to interactive systems.
This research was conducted as part of an ongoing collaboration between Isbister and Höök of the Swedish Institute for Computer Science (SICS). LL&C doctoral student Michael Sharp, as well as Jarmo Laaksolahti, a researcher SICS, are co-authors of the paper.
Jason Swarts Receives Award from National Council of Teachers of English - 02.06.2006

LL&C doctoral alumnus Jason Swarts ('02) has won the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Award for the Best Article in the Philosophy or Theory of Technical or Scientific Communication for his article, "Textual Grounding: How People Turn Texts into Tools," published in The Journal of Technical Writing and Communication (34.1) 2004: 67-89.
Robert Krull Named an Associate Fellow of Society for Technical Communication (STC) - 02.06.2006

LL&C Professor Robert Krull has just been named an Associate Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication (STC). Bob will receive this award at the STC convention in Las Vegas this May 2006.
According to its Bylaws, the rank of Associate Fellow is conferred upon a senior member of the STC who has attained distinction in the field of technical communication, and is decided by a two-thirds vote of the entire STC board.
Annis Golden and Cheryl Geisler Awarded One of Top Three Papers by National Communication Association - 01.17.2006

Annis Golden, LL&C doctoral alumnus and currently Assistant Professor of Communication at the University at Albany, and Cheryl Geisler, Professor and Chair of LL&C, were awarded one of the Top Three Papers in the Division of Organization Communication by the National Communication Association (NCA) for their recently-delivered paper, "Work-Life Boundary Management and the Personal Digital Assistant: Practical Activities and Interpretative Repertoires".

Audrey Bennett and Bridget Rice Publish Article on Font System for Early Readers - 01.13.2006

LL&C Associate Prof. Audrey Bennett, and Bridget Rice, a recent EMAC graduate, published "Bradbury Thompson's Alphabet 26: A Font System for Early Readers?" in VOICE, the American Institute of Graphic Arts' Journal of Design.

Patent Pending for LL&C Doctoral Candidate D. Michael Sharp - 01.05.2006

LL&C doctoral candidate, D. Michael Sharp, reports, "For my dissertation, I've begun to explore what effects 3D, interactive graphics might have on people, when presented as procedural information. My concept differs from regular instructions because it allows users to change their instructions to meet their own needs. Rather than a set of static instructions, I invite the users to transform their instructions. For this concept, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Office of Technology Commercialization has filed a provisional patent application with the US Patent and Trademark Office."
