Recent Grad Develops Computerized Musical Instrument - 06.08.2007

EMAC and Computer Science graduate Zane Van Dusen '07, in collaboration with Arts Prof. Pauline Oliveros, recently developed a computerized instrument for physically challenged individuals that is played with the tip of one's nose. Music offers a way to break out of the bonds of a physical disability because it gives patients a means to express themselves.

In contrast with current music tools that are expensive or limiting, Van Dusen's interface consists of an inexpensive web camera and motion-tracking software. The software places a red box on the tip of a person's nose, and it tracks the user's movement across an on-screen keyboard.

Van Dusen notes that "the instrument will give a voice to those who are all too often ignored due to their physical disability". Moreover, the interface could be adapted for speech, giving the physically challenged the ability to form full sentences rather than just yes or no responses.

Ekaterina Haskins Receives Karl Wallace Memorial Award, Rhetorical Studies - 05.03.2007

LL&C Associate Prof. Ekaterina (Katya) Haskins has been awarded the Karl Wallace Memorial Award by the National Communication Association.

The Karl Wallace Memorial Award is one of the coveted NCA awards given to rhetorical studies scholars. It is given to foster and promote philosophical, historical, or critical scholarship in rhetoric and public discourse. Awardees must be NCA members who have completed the Ph.D. within the past ten years or who are well advanced in doctoral studies in rhetoric and public address.

The NCA Award Committee had the following to say about Dr. Haskins:

"In remarkably short order, Dr. Ekaterina Haskins has established an exceptional record of scholarship, with an award-winning book Logos and Power in Isocrates and Aristotle, as well as articles and chapters on such topics as the collective memory embodied in American postage stamps, commemorations of 9/11, and images of New York City in television programs. Her current project on the construction, destruction, and reconstruction of the Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow as a site of public memory spans the Czarist, Soviet, and post-communist periods. This award will support her examination of the constitution of national identity through the rhetorical construction of the Church as an architectural structure, using archival materials and an impressive tapestry of theoretical constructs. Her project, while historically specific and rich, promises broad theoretical and critical implications. The result will enhance our understanding of rhetorical history, rhetorical theory, public memory, visual analysis, and cultural identity. Dr. Haskins well deserves the Karl R. Wallace Memorial Award to foster and promote philosophical, historical, or critical scholarship in rhetoric and public discourse."

In addition to the honor of the award, recipients get a cash prize up to $1,200.
