Kristy Kolb: Blazing a Path for Success - 05.16.2008

Recent H&SS graduate Kristy Kolb '08 has followed in the footsteps of her grandmother, one of Rensselaer's first two women graduates. But Kolb is also blazing her own path, just as she has throughout her four years at the Institute.

Kolb spent a semester at Charles University in Prague, "because I wanted to study in a place that was rediscovering itself." She interned as a research assistant at the Alden March Bioethics Institute and, for her senior thesis, wrote about the ethics of cognitive-enhancing drugs. Even Kolb's dual major -- communication, and science and technology studies -- is not typical.

"I'm more confident now and have become a better leader," Kolb says. "I know my strengths and my interests, I appreciate the experiences I've had here, and I'm proud to graduate from Rensselaer."

Nathan Freier Quoted in Article on Child-Robot Interactions - 11.07.2007

LL&C Assistant Prof. Nathan Freier was interviewed recently and quoted in an article by Science Magazine on child-robot interactions which were studied by researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Fumihide Tanaka, a robotics researcher at UCSD, noted that the results of their study imply that "current robot technology is surprisingly close to achieving [sustained] autonomous bonding and socialization with human toddlers".

Prof. Freier offered a cautious voice to the findings, arguing against over-generalizing the results. "The authors are drawing general conclusions... beyond what the data alone suggest," noted Freier, and "haptic contact... cannot stand alone as an indicator of bonding or socialization." But Freier also called the study an "excellent foundation" for future studies into childhood development and technology design.
