Professor Patricia Search Awarded Fulbright Senior Specialists Grant - 12.17.2003

Patricia Search has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialists Grant in Communications and Journalism. Professor Search will go to Sydney, Australia to work with on the design and development of interface concepts for online programs in Indigenous studies that are being developed by professors in the Indigenous Academic Development Unit in the Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia and the University of Western Sydney.

Professor Search has been working on new models for computer interface design for interactive multimedia programs. These models are derived from oral communication techniques in Indigenous cultures. The goal of this project is to develop interface designs that represent the Indigenous conceptual models for the online programs in Indigenous studies.

Patricia Search, who has been recognized with international awards for her research in multimedia design, will join a team of multidisciplinary experts in Australia that has been assembled to assist the Indigenous Academic Development Unit at University of Technology in Sydney (UTS) to define particular online curriculum, pedagogical, and assessment issues in the proposed courses. The team at UTS has worked in Indigenous Education for over twenty years and recently completed an extensive review of the literature on online curriculum and pedagogies across Australia, United States, and Canada. The team at the University of Western Sydney has extensive experience with building university mainframes, emerging Information Technologies, and the flexible delivery of online courses. In addition, a small number of other Australian universities, who are currently involved in the delivery of higher education programs to remote Indigenous Australian communities, will be invited to participate in the program. Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory Officially Opens - 10.28.2003

The new Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory (SBRL) in the historic Gurley building in downtown Troy held its grand opening October 6th, 2003, with a showcase of the facilities and the research currently being conducted within. Government officials, community leaders, researchers, professors, and media from the Capital Region were invited to share in the celebration.

The SBRL, part of Rensselaer’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences (H&SS), is a home for research focusing primarily on the social, cognitive, and behavioral impact of information technology. The facility supports basic research and graduate instruction in psychology, communication, cognitive science, informatics, and technology studies.

The SBRL contains a 10-station professional-grade computer-aided telephone and Web survey research lab; rooms with state-of-the-art eye-gaze recording systems and multiple video and audio recording systems; digital editing systems; programming workstations; streaming Web video servers; and an immersive virtual-reality studio equipped with a full motion-tracking system. A configurable open space is available for workshops, discussions, presentations, and large-group data collection.

Many of the researchers on current projects were present for the event, demonstrating the equipment and explaining their projects to the assembled guests. The projects range from studying how people play games, in order to apply the high degree of intuitiveness and ability improvement those interfaces engender, to using the virtual reality systems to study how people intercept a moving target – in this case, a virtual basketball. The recording facilities are in use in the Time-Independent Collaboration System, which combines the asynchronicity of e-mail with the visual and verbal cues of video-conferencing to create an entirely new method of internet communication. Students are making use of the facility as well; a research team of mainly graduate students was on hand to present their projects concerning the use of the internet in the 2004 Presidential campaign. TroyNet and Connected Kids, joint RPI/City of Troy projects, are both headquartered in the SBRL.

Patricia Search: Fellowship in Computer Arts, Exhibition - 07.15.2003

Patricia Search was awarded a Fellowship in Computer Arts from the New York Foundation for the Arts. This is a highly competitive and prestigious grant program. One hundred and forty-four grants were awarded from among 3500 applications. This year's NYFA Fellows were celebrated at a reception at the Whitney Museum of American Art at Altria in New York City.

Professor Search currently has a solo exhibition entitled "Finding the Center" at the Amos Eno Gallery in New York City. "Finding the Center" explores new forms of temporal, spatial, and rhythmic links in interactive design that define a "spatial grammar" of interaction and enable the viewer to explore information outside a Western framework of hierarchies and causality. The geometry of space and time are juxtaposed with the poems and rhythms of aboriginal cultures forming an audiovisual counterpoint to the mechanical rhythm of the human-computer interface. "Finding the Center" emphasizes the importance of using fundamental elements of human perception to bridge the gap between the tangible physical world and the ethereal world of electronic communication.
