Huatong Sun Receives Best Thesis Award from Localization Research Centre - 09.22.2004

The doctoral dissertation written by Huatong Sun (Ph.D., August '04), entitled "Expanding the Scope of Localization: A Cultural Usability Perspective on Mobile Text Messaging Use in American and Chinese Contexts", won the Best Thesis Award from the Localization Research Centre (LRC) in the University of Limerick, Ireland. LRC recognizes the scholarship in localization studies around the world and publishes the first International Journal of Localisation.

LL&C's new Assistant Professor Ekaterina (Katya) Haskins has been appointed to serve as the new Book Review Editor for Rhetoric Society Quarterly, published by the Rhetoric Society of America (RSA.)
Paul Miyamoto Named Juror of "New Mexico Digital 2004" Contemporary Photo Exhibition - 07.13.2004

Paul Miyamoto, Clinical Assistant Professor of Graphics in the Dept. of LL&C, will serve as one of 4 national jurors for "New Mexico Digital 2004," a contemporary photo exhibition in Santa Fe, NM. Prof. Miyamoto will create branding and marketing work for Millay Colony for the Arts, Austerlitz, NY, an internationally-known artists' colony located on the former estate of Edna St. Vincent Millay. He will also design a publication about the Monitor battleship, to be published by the Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway, Troy, NY. And his work, "Economical Circus", based on artwork influenced by Troy, NY advertising styles from the past and present, will be exhibited at the CAC, North Adams, MA, July 2004.
Audrey Bennett Named Review Editor for Design Research: Journal of the Australian Graphic Design Association - 06.14.2004

Audrey Bennett, LL&C associate professor of graphics, was named a Review Editor for the Design Research: Journal of the Australian Graphic Design Association, which has affiliations with the International Council of Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA). Her paper, "Towards an Autochthonic Black Aesthetic for Graphic Design Pedagogy," will be published in the Journal of Design Research's theme issue on Design Learning Strategies and Design Pedagogy, Volume 3, Issue 2. Bennett's graphic art piece, "Design Manifesto" that visualizes her teaching philosophy on research and theory in graphic design, was one of 30 selected out of 100 entries for the "I Profess: The Graphic Design Manifesto", an international juried exhibition co-sponsored by Michigan State University and Montserrat College of Art. The exhibition will travel nationally.

Patricia Search, LL&C professor of graphics, had an art exhibition at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, where she is a visiting Fulbright scholar this summer. She was honored at a reception that was attended by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Technology, and the Consul General of the United States of America.
LL&C doctoral student Debopriyo Roy Awarded STC National Scholarship - 04.22.2004

LL&C doctoral student Debopriyo Roy has been awarded a $1000 award as part of The Society for Technical Communication's (STC) national scholarship program. Annually only two students are chosen from graduate programs in technical communication across the nation and internationally. The scholarship selection committee evaluates applicants on their academic records, their experience with technical communication, and their potential for contributing to the profession of technical communication. Per the STC website, "The recipients of this award have exhibited the potential for contributing to the profession. They have strong academic records and have received high recommendations from their instructors. STC congratulates the scholarship recipients."

Judith (Judy) A. Barnes, has been named 2004 recipient of the Rensselaer Alumni Association Fellows Award, nominated by the Dept. of Language, Literature, and Communication. Judy Barnes earned an M.S. in Technical Writing in 1971, and her Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric in 1984, and has since led a distinguished career in communication.

Professor Bob Krull and Graduate Students Sean D'Souza, Debopriyo Roy, and Michael Sharp publish "Designing Procedural Illustrations" in March issue of IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication.
Article abstract: Ideally, illustrations for procedural documents should show actions from the point of view of performers, especially if performers' bodies need to be positioned a particular way to perform actions. At the same time, illustrations also should ameliorate the limits of two-dimensional displays (such as the printed page or electronic screen) by showing bodies, objects, and movements across the display plane. These two requirements may conflict, possibly necessitating use of compromise views.

Audrey Bennett was a judge for the Society for Technical Communication's International Art Competition that took place March 12-13, 2004 in Houston, Texas. The STC sponsors this competition to recognize outstanding work by technical communicators locally and internationally. The competition covers online communication, technical art, and technical publications. STC chapters hold preliminary competitions to recognize information products on a local or regional level. All winners of the Distinguished Technical Communication (DTC) award in these local competitions are eligible to advance to this international competition.
Making a Career: An Interview with Ray Lutzky '02 - 04.01.2004

When Ray Lutzky ’02 entered Rensselaer in fall 1998 as an H&SS EMAC major (Electronic Media, Art and Communication), his goal was to become a web designer and graphic artist. However, as he describes in the interview that follows, that desire developed into something far different over the course of four undergraduate years. Through external involvements, strategic electives, and a blend of internship experiences, Ray discovered new interests and avenues of opportunity. See full interview.

Doctoral student Shaun Slattery will present "Reconceiving How Writing Happens: 'Habit of Mind' vs. Mediated Activity" at the "Under Construction" Graduate Student Conference at RPI, February 14.
He will discuss his dissertation research as part of the Graduate Research Network at the 2004 Conference of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing on March 25.
