Huatong Sun Receives Dissertation Award in Technical Communication - 02.11.2005 


LL&C alumnus Huatong Sun (Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric, granted August 2004) has been notified by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) that her dissertation, "Expanding the Scope of Localization: A Cultural Usability Perspective on Mobile Text Messaging Use in American and Chinese Context," has been selected as the winner of the 2005 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC) Outstanding Dissertation Award in Technical Communication.

Huatong will be presented with a certificate at the Awards/Retirement Session of the 2005 CCCC Convention in San Francisco on Friday, March 18. The award includes reimbursement of Ms. Sun's conference registration fee and a one-year membership to NCTE/CCCC.

Ken Denberg Wins Grant for Creative Non-Fiction Essays - 01.12.2005 


LL&C adjunct professor Ken Denberg has won a $1500 grant from the NY State Council on the Arts Literature Program for 2005. The award was based on the submission of creative non-fiction essays that appeared in Main St. News, a new paper in Cambridge, NY.

The two essays submitted were on the subjects of "BBQ" and on "the New York State Apple industry, particularly Washington County", where Prof. Denberg resides. Several more essays will be forthcoming to satisfy the grant criteria.

Tamar Gordon Showcases Video Documentary at XII International Festival of Ethnographic Films - 12.02.2004 


Prof. Tamar Gordon's video documentary "Global Villages: The Globalization of Ethnic Display", funded by a Provost's Seed Grant, was an official selection at the XII International Festival of Ethnographic Films held October 25-30 in Sardinia, Italy. The film depicts ethnic theme parks of China and Japan, where official narratives of tradition and history are coded in dances, interactive routines, and artifacts of culture.

"Global Villages" premiered in March 2004 at the East Asia International Visual Anthropology Association meetings at Yunnan University, Kunming, China, and was also shown by invitation at the Hong Kong History Museum, jointly sponsored by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Anthropological Society.

Two Rensselaer students were involved in the making of the documentary film: Erich Schienke, Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS) served as research assistant, still photographer and field sound recordist; and Lazarina Todorova, M.F.A. (iEAR [integrated Electronic Arts], 2003) edited the video.

Katherine Isbister Secures Recognition on 'Best of Show' DVD From 2004 Game Developer's Conference - 12.01.2004 


LL&C Prof. Katherine Isbister's presentation on Social Psychology and Game Character Design at the 2004 Game Developer's Conference was selected as one of ten released on the conference "Best of Show" DVD. She also recently published a book chapter on agent and character design entitled 'The Blind Men and the Elephant Revisited: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Evaluating Conversational Agents', co-authored with Patrick Doyle in (Z. Ruttkay and C. Pelachaud, Eds.) From Brows to Trust: Evaluating Embodied Conversational Agents, Volume 7, Human Computer Interaction series, Kluwer Press.

Audrey Bennett Delivers Lecture at University of Alberta, Canada - 11.30.2004 


Prof. Audrey Bennett of LL&C delivered an invited lecture titled "When Technology Facilitates Collaborative Designing Between U.S. Educators and Third World Participants in Real World Problem Solving" at the University of Alberta, Canada on October 21, 2004.

Merrill Whitburn: Recent Accomplishments - 11.30.2004 


Prof. Merrill Whitburn of LL&C published "Rhetorical Theory in Yale's Graduate Schools in the Late Nineteenth Century: The Example of William C. Robinson's Forensic Oratory," Rhetorical Society Quarterly 34 (2004): 55-70. Prof. Whitburn was also selected as the first Rensselaer faculty member for the RPI-SUNY Humanities-Social Sciences exchange program, and will be a visiting faculty member in Spring, 2005.

Roger Grice Named Founding Editor of the Society for Technical Communication Press - 11.30.2004 


Prof. Roger Grice of LL&C has been named the founding editor of the Society for Technical Communication Press. With two associate acquisitions editors, he will publish book manuscripts for STC, an international association with over 25,000 members.

Roger Grice Presents at International Professonal Communication Conference - 11.30.2004 


Prof. Roger Grice of LL&C presented two papers in September 2004 at the International Professional Communication Conference (IPCC '04), St. Paul, Minnesota: Kwang Bok Lee (Samsung Corporation) and Roger Grice: "Developing a New Usability Testing Method for Mobile Devices"; and Marjorie T. Davis (Mercer University), Roger A. Grice, and Thomas R. Williams (University of Washington): "Capping Off the Undergraduate Degree in Technical Communication -- Some Options." Prof. Grice also moderated a panel at the Conference entitled "Teaching with Technology."

Sandrine Dincki Presents at NCA 2004 Convention - 11.29.2004 


LL&C doctoral student Sandrine Dincki recently presented a paper entitled "Samizdat.net: A Simulacrum of Underground Resistance?" at the NCA 2004 Convention held in Chicago in November. In this paper, she investigated how the alternative collective/portal samizdat.net seeks to fight the disconnect between the global order and localized "real life experience" in the context of the network society.

Teresa Hübscher-Younger and Binod Sundararajan Attended NCA Convention - 11.19.2004 


LL&C Assistant Prof. Teresa Hübscher-Younger and doctoral student Binod Sundararajan recently attended the NCA 2004 Convention held in Chicago November 11-14, 2004. They co-authored and presented a paper entitled "Virtual Juror Environment for Civil and Criminal Cases", describing the methods and measures that will be used to conduct an investigation into the use of CMC environments to facilitate small group decision making among co-located and geographically dispersed juries.

LL&C Involvement at the National Communication Association Convention - 11.17.2004 


The National Communication Association (NCA) Convention held its 90th Anniversary celebration in Chicago on November 11-14, 2004. S. Michael Halloran, former chair of LL&C and now a professor emeritus, and Assistant Prof. Ekaterina Haskins participated in the convention.

Former LL&C graduate students of Michael Halloran offered brief reflections on the published work of their dissertation advisor. Entitled "The First Thirty Years: Reflections on the Work of S. Michael Halloran, Past, Present, and Future," the reflections were delivered by LL&C doctoral alumni Carolyn Miller (North Carolina State), Greg Clark (Brigham Young U.), Dale Sullivan (North Dakota State), Steve Katz (North Carolina State), Randy Harris (U. of Waterloo), Liz Wright (Rivier College), Jerry Blitefield (U-Mass, Dartmouth), and Mike Jackson (U. of New Hampshire).

Additional presentations at NCA included that given by five prominent scholars of the history of rhetoric on Ekaterina Haskins' recently published book, "Moving Forward and Looking Back at the Isocratean Tradition: Ekaterina Haskins' Logos and Power in Isocrates and Aristotle." Haskins also presented two papers: "The Use of Epideictic in Plato and Isocrates" and "Metonymy and the 'Metropolis': Television Show Settings and the Image of New York City" (co-authored by William Sadler of Boston College).

As President of the American Society for the History of Rhetoric (ASHR), Ekaterina Haskins also organized the sequence of sessions sponsored by that society within the overall program of the NCA, and she was a respondent to one of the featured presentations at the ASHR pre-convention colloquium on the theme "Rhetoric and Its Institutions."

Paul Miyamoto Chosen for Two Local Design Projects - 10.19.2004 


Paul Miyamoto, Clinical Assistant Professor of Graphics in LL&C, has been chosen for two local design projects. The first is from Ekologic, an apparel manufacturer in Troy, to redesign their website to accommodate direct sales on the Internet. Prof. Miyamoto is also working with Market Block Books on branding for their new bookstore that will be opening in the fall at the apex of the Market Block Building in Troy.

In addition, Troy Rehabilitation & Improvement Program (TRIP) has commissioned Prof. Miyamoto to design their first ever annual report this year. Finally, Paul will be in TRUE NORTH, a group exhibition of contemporary artwork at the Miami International Airport this winter.

Ekaterina Haskins Publishes Lead Article in Philosophy and Rhetoric - 10.18.2004 


Assistant Prof. Ekaterina Haskins of LL&C has published the article "Endoxa, Epistemological Optimism, and Aristotle's Rhetorical Project," in Philosophy and Rhetoric 37.1 (2004): 1-20 (Lead article). She also published the book chapter "Logos and Power in Sophistical and Isocratean Rhetoric," in Isocrates and Civic Education, edited by Takis Poulakos and David J. Depew, Austin: University of Texas Press, 2004. 84-103.

Ekaterina Haskins to Present Two Papers at National Communication Association Conference - 10.18.2004 


Assistant Prof. Ekaterina Haskins of LL&C will present two papers at the National Communication Association conference: "Metonymy and the Metropolis: Television Show Settings and the Image of New York City" (with William Sadler), and "The Use of Epideictic in Plato and Isocrates." The Conference takes place in Chicago, from Nov. 11-14, 2004.

Junho Choi Lectures on the Perception of Media Credibility Concerning the War in Iraq - 10.18.2004 


Assistant Prof. Junho Choi of LL&C delivered a lecture, "The War in Iraq and the Perception of Media Credibility," at Dong-Guk University, Seoul, Korea, July 16, 2004. The topic originated from a joint research with LL&C Professor and Chair James Watt, and Lecturer Michael Lynch.

The research is based on an online survey which examined how people got the news about the war in Iraq and evaluated credibility of each news channel and medium. Major findings of the survey are availabe on the website of the Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory (SBRL). The manuscript of this research is currently under review by a journal.

Junho Choi Publishes in the Top Communication Journal of South Korea - 10.18.2004 


Assistant Prof. Junho Choi of LL&C, with Sung-Hee Park (Ewha Woman's University at Seoul, S. Korea), published "Crosscultural Analysis on Internet Motives: South Korea and the U.S." in the Korean Journal of Journalism & Communication Studies, 48(4). This is the top communication journal in South Korea, therefore the publication also helps international publicity of communication program at RPI.

This work is originated from the Multinational Web Use Study Project conducted in the Social and Behavioral Research Lab (SBRL). Along with research partners in Netherlands and S. Korea, Prof. and LL&C Chair James Watt, and graduate students Binod Sundararajan and Priya Nambisan have also participated in this research. More publications of outcomes from the collaborative international survey of three countries -- the U.S., the Netherlands, and S. Korea -- are forthcoming.

LL&C Graduate Students Form the First Student Chapter of the Rhetoric Society of America at RPI - 10.18.2004 


Communication and rhetoric graduate students in the Department of LL&C have formed the first student chapter of the Rhetoric Society of America, naming it after Professor Emeritus S. Michael Halloran. Michael served as president of RSA, and he was recently named a Fellow of the Society for his dedicated service and impact on the field of rhetoric.

Debopriyo Roy Publishes Paper on Hypermedia Design for Patient Education - 10.08.2004 


LL&C doctoral student Debopriyo Roy has published a paper in the procedings of SIGDOC 2004 (Special Interest Group on Documentation) and is scheduled to present in Memphis, TN. The name of the paper is "A Self-Paced Approach to Hypermedia Design for Patient Education".

James Watt Secures Grant for Researching Audio and Tactile Feedback - 10.08.2004 


James Watt, professor and Chair of LL&C, received an $80,000 NSF grant, in conjunction with TouchGraphics of New York City, for the project "SBIR Phase II: Creating Accessible Science Museums for Blind and Visually Impaired Visitors with User-Activated Audio Beacons." He also initiated the second year of the FIPSE-funded project, "A Model for Enhancing Graphical Learning for Students with Print Disabilities: An Audio/Tactile Statistics Curriculum." This project is a collaboration with Baruch College, City University of New York. Both projects will be conducted in the Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory.
